Microsoft Allies with Baidu, Reveals Windows 10 Express

Software developer Microsoft CorporationMSFT has entered into a strategic partnership with Chinese Internet giant Baidu Inc. BIDU in a bid to push the availability of Windows 10 in China.

It's been nearly two months since Microsoft officially released the latest version of its flagship software, Windows 10. Within the first month of its launch, Windows corporate VP Yusuf Mehdi tweeted that Windows 10 is now on 75 million computers.

Microsoft wants to capture more customers for its new Windows 10 software and hence the deal.

Alliance

Microsoft says its aim behind the partnership is to offer Chinese customers an easier upgrade to its new software along with providing local, personalized browsing and searching experiences.

Under the terms of the alliance, Microsoft will make Baidu (not Bing) the default search engine and default home page (instead of MSN) on Microsoft's Windows 10 Edge browser.

In addition, a new Baidu "Windows 10 Express" app will help Baidu's 600 million-plus users to easily and safely download and install Microsoft's new operating system. Baidu will also introduce standalone, universal apps for cloud, search, maps and video for Windows 10 soon.

Conclusion

China is considered as one of the most lucrative markets in the world and continues to become a more and more important market for global technology companies. Therefore, Microsoft's partnership with China's leading search engine is pivotal.

Mehdi said that over 10 million devices are running on Windows 10 in China, thanks to partnerships with PC maker Lenovo, Internet security firm Qihoo 360 QIHU and others.

Microsoft aims to see Windows 10 on 1 billion devices worldwide by 2018. Hence, the move is vital given China's population. It is expected to win numbers in the country given Baidu's presence in China (it is touted as China's Google). Per China Internet Network Information Center, over 92% of Internet users in the country use Baidu for search. Google is ranked fourth with only 27% of the country's population using it, while Bing is used by less than 2%. So replacing Bing with Baidu makes sense.

Like anywhere around the globe, Windows as a desktop operating system, has a significant presence in China. However, the software developer failed to monetize and earn profits because a large number of computers sold had pirated versions of Windows. So the deal will let users easily download an authorized, licensed version of Windows 10, thereby helping Microsoft to earn money out of it.
