Microchip (MCHP) Launches New, Enhanced Controller Family - Analyst Blog

Leading semiconductor manufacturer Microchip Technology Inc.MCHP unveiled the 14-member dsPIC33EP "GS" family of Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs). These DSCs have applications in a broad range of industries, from computer to industrial to automotive.

The DSC family is powered with the performance to handle more sophisticated non-linear, predictive and adaptive control algorithms at higher switching frequencies.

These advanced algorithms help in building more energy-efficient power supply designs that have better power supply specifications. Also, higher switching frequencies facilitate the development of power supplies that are physically smaller, offer higher densities and involve lower costs.

In comparison to the previous generation of DSCs, the new devices consume up to 80% less power in any application, and offer less than half the latency, when used in a three-pole three-zero compensator. The new family also boasts advanced features such as Live Update Flash capability. Live Update is helpful in changing the firmware of an operating power supply while maintaining continuous regulation. It is especially applicable for high-availability or "always-on" systems.

The new devices enable higher-precision designs and also save cost and board space. These features, along with the overall high performance of the dsPIC33EP "GS" family, make it ideal for an extensive range of applications, including industrial (e.g., solar inverters, HID lighting, projectors, battery chargers, LED lighting and welders) computer & telecom (e.g., AC/DC and DC/DC power supplies), and automotive (e.g., DC/DC converters, LED and HID headlights).

The new product line builds upon Microchip's existing dsPIC33 digital power families, offering better performance and advanced integrated features, and is thus optimized for digital power applications. The new family will enable next-generation designs to accomplish superior efficiency and more compact form factors, with smaller footprint and lower power consumption.

Microchip presently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Other semiconductor players that are worth mentioning now include MagnaChip Semiconductor Corporation MX , MaxLinear, Inc. MXL and NXP Semiconductors NV NXPI , each carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
