Market Wrap-Up for Dec.16 (DRI, ACN, STT, CVC, GLD, FDX, more)

The market was on its way to a strong day, but the buying was unable to build on the early strength. The U.S. averages did close mixed, but the real disappointment was the lack of follow-through in the European markets today following the rally in Asia overnight.

Darden Restaurants ( DRI ) and Accenture ( ACN ) both traded lower following earnings results. A Wall Street analyst upgrade of regional bank plays State Street ( STT ) and BB&T ( BBT ) had those names finishing in the green. Follow-up recommendations continued to come in for yesterday's earnings star, FedEx ( FDX ), helping the stock add on to yesterday's lift. Gold ( GLD ) prices bounced as bottom-fishers think the yellow metal could be over-sold in the near term. For dividend investors, we would not look to venture into the commodity space at this time, unless we see a yield that we think is attractive and can be sustained. Finally, it wasn't a good day for Cablevision ( CVC ) shares following the resignation of a key company executive, which quickly caused a Bank of America ( BAC ) analyst to cut its rating.

The Lollipop Is the Cherry on Top

I remember spending plenty of days in my dad's barbershop and I was always amazed how well one of my dad's technique (used by many barbers as a matter of fact) of giving kids a lollipop following a haircut. Depending if there was excessive crying, my dad would sometimes have to pull out the lollipop midway through a haircut. You could sometimes see hair getting on the lollipop, but the child wouldn't care. Parents, especially moms would love the extra touch, not to mention a great haircut as well. If you are in business today, are there anything you are giving out to enhance your customer's experience. At Dividend.com, we write a free newsletter that goes out to over 30K people a day, as well as offering anyone our premium service to try for free for two weeks without asking for any credit card information.

At the end of the day you will always need a quality product to convince customers they will not only be happy, but will be coming back again and again. If my dad gave awful haircuts, he would have needed to give out more than lollipops to ever get people to come back or spread the word about how satisfied they were. We keep this lesson in our mind as we push forward each day navigating through the market as best we can to get investors the best results.
