Liberty Global Adds ARRIS Touchstone TG2492 Gateway
Leading cable multi service operator (MSO) Liberty Global plc LBTYA has armed itself with ARRIS Touchstone TG2492 Gateway to support its high-speed broadband internet and streaming services. The device was developed jointly by Liberty Global, ARRIS Group Inc. ARRS and Compal Electronics of Taiwan. The company announced its wide-scale deployment of the gateway device, starting with Telnet customers in Belgium and UPC customers in Romania, followed by an expansion in the American markets later. In Feb 2015, ARRIS had secured a 4K video gateway deal with Liberty Global.
What's Special about Touchstone TG2492?
The flagship Touchstone TG2492 wireless gateway is touted to deliver best-in-class Wi-Fi performance, faster speeds, and improved connectivity for an expanding number of consumer devices. With consumers increasingly using streaming services for watching Internet TV through mobile devices, the gateway is expected to provide Liberty Global a platform to offer more innovative media and IPTV services in the future.
Another key feature of the device is the support it extends for IPv6, Business Services and Wi-Fi Hotspots. This helps extend the reach of network deployment for operators. Since Wi-Fi calling is gaining momentum, these features can be a potential game-changer for Liberty Global and challenge wireless giants like Verizon Communications Inc. VZ and AT&T Inc. T , who recently received a nod from the FCC to deploy their own Wi-Fi calling services. Moreover, the gateway upgrade will also spur growth in Liberty Global's business services segment and boost its presence in the global push for Internet of Things (IoT) development.
The Road Ahead
Liberty Global is rapidly expanding its global presence. It recently reached an agreement to buy Caribbean cable operator Cable & Wireless Communications plc. Moreover, it is keen to deploy the DOCSIS 3.1 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) protocol which allows cable MSOs to provide high-speed broadband connections. This technology was specifically designed as the cable TV industry's answer to high-speed wireless and fiber-based wireline networks of telecom operators.
While the cable-TV business is gradually depleting with subscribers shifting preference to content-based Internet TV service providers like HULU and NetFlix Inc., the high-speed Internet business is gaining ground. With such multiple diversification measures, Liberty Global is well positioned for organic growth going forward.
Libety Global presently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
