ISM services lead quiet agenda

The agenda quiets this week, though quarterly earnings will begin to flow.

European retail sales are the first event early in the session and may affect sentiment.

The Institute for Supply Management's service-sector index at 10 a.m. ET is the main U.S. event. Economists are looking for a reading of 58 for September, down from 59 in the previous month.

Tomorrow brings the trade balance, along with results from PepsiCo in the morning and Yum Brands in the afternoon.

Wednesday's agenda includes mortgage applications and crude-oil inventories. Monsanto and Constellation Brands report before the opening bell.

Thursday features same-store sales from select retailers, jobless claims, and minutes from the last Fed meeting. Alcoa's earnings are due in the post-market.

Friday is quiet.
