Investors more bullish on Patterson Companies (NASDAQ:PDCO) this week as stock grows 4.6%, despite earnings trending downwards over past three years

Buying a low-cost index fund will get you the average market return. But in any diversified portfolio of stocks, you'll see some that fall short of the average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Patterson Companies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PDCO) share price is up 43% in the last three years, that falls short of the market return. Some buyers are laughing, though, with an increase of 29% in the last year.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Patterson Companies became profitable within the last three years. So we would expect a higher share price over the period.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Patterson Companies, it has a TSR of 62% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Patterson Companies shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 34% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 2% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Patterson Companies better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that Patterson Companies is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 2 of those are potentially serious...
