Is The Internet Taking Over Hollywood's Awards Season?

There are always snubs and surprises when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and the Screen Actors Guild announce their nominations for the annual Golden Globe Awards and the SAG Awards, respectively. While the film categories saw a good mix of nominees from major and independent film studios, the television groups saw a noticeable lack of nominees from major television networks like NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX, nominees that usually dominate the awards season. Instead, non-traditional and emerging networks dominated both awards' lists. Let's take a look at the widely-varied 2016 TV show nominees.

The Television Shows

This season, both The Golden Globes and The SAG Awards showed just how crowded the television production company space is. Traditional TV networks like the above mentioned NBC, ABC, and CBS, as well as FOX, have consistently lead the list of nominees over the years. The 2016 awards season, however, demonstrates a change in the television industry: the non-traditional markets have taken over.

Streaming video giant Netflix NFLX proves once again its impact on television with nominees on both lists for its series Narcos , Bloodline , Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt , Grace and Frankie , Daredevil , Master of None , House of Cards , and Orange is the New Black (its first feature film Beasts of No Nation also received recognition in the film categories).

Amazon AMZN 's critically acclaimed series Transparent received recognition from both the HFPA and SAG. Actor Jeffrey Tambor was nominated in both awards' Male Actor, Comedy categories, while the show as a whole was nominated for a Best TV Series, Comedy Golden Globe and an Outstanding Ensemble Performance, Comedy SAG Award. Its show Mozart in the Jungle received two Golden Globe nominations in comedy categories as well.

Hulu, a joint venture between Comcast's CMCSA NBCUniversal Television Group, 21 st Century Fox's FOX Fox Broadcasting Company, Disney's DIS ABC Television Group, also showed its production chops with the acclaimed comedy series Casual, which received one Golden Globe nomination in Best TV Series, Comedy.

With the Internet companies out of the way, premium specialty programmers made up the majority of the rest of the nominations. Time Warner TWX -owned HBO received multiple nominations across both awards shows for their series Game of Thrones , Silicon Valley , and Veep . CBS Corp CBS -owned Showtime Networks got both ensemble and individual actor recognition for many of its series including Homeland, Nurse Jackie, The Affair, Penny Dreadful, and Shameless. Starz, owned by Starz Inc STRZA , was recognized for its popular series Outlander , Blunt Talk , and ballet drama Flesh and Bone .

Other cable channels like PBS, FX, AMC, USA Network, and The CW were showed lots of love this season. Each network received 4, 5, 2, 3, and 2 Golden Globe Awards nominations, respectively.

Overall, it appears that the Screen Actors Guild favored the traditional TV networks more than the Golden Globes this year; only a handful of shows nominated by the HFPA, including Empire , American Crime , Scream Queens , The Grinder , and How to Get Away with Murder, came from classic TV networks.
