Healthcare Stocks Still In Hole Near Close; Prothera Adds Over 10% After Pricing Secondary Offering

Healthcare stocks were down Wednesday with the NYSE Healthcare Sector Index down about 1.0% and shares of healthcare companies in the S&P 500 also losing around 1.0% as a group.

In company news, Prothena ( PRTA ) shares added over 10% today after the biotech company priced an underwritten public offering of 2.77 million shares of its common stock at $26 apiece.

All of the shares were being sold by Elan Science One Ltd, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Perrigo Company plc. Elan also has granted 30-day option to underwriters to purchase up to 415,076 additional shares to cover possible over-allotments.

In other sector news,

(+) MDVN, Said its Enzalutamide drug candidate demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in the risk of death and delayed disease progression during Phase III testing in men with metastatic prostate cancer.

(-) PGNX, Study summary posted online ahead of a company presentation on Thursday showed two patients died of sepsis during Phase II testing of its prospective treatment for prostate cancer.
