Health care stocks ended mostly higher today, with the NYSE Health Care Index advancing over 0.5% while shares of health care companies in the S&P 500 were up about 0.6% as a group.
In company news, Aeterna Zentaris rallied Wednesday after the drugmaker today said the company and its prospects "remain fundamentally strong" after its announcement Tuesday that investors had exercised all of its remaining Series B warrants appeared to spur a nearly 10% decline for its stock price yesterday.
The company said yesterday's announcement was required by the Toronto Stock Exchange, causing some to question its business fundamentals.
AEZS shares were up nearly 49% at $11.43 each today, earlier climbing to a session high of $11.68 a share.
In other sector news,
(+) CTIX, FDA issues Fast-Track designation for Brilacidin-OM drug candidate, now in Phase II testing to evaluate its safety and efficacy treating mouth inflammation and sores often occurring for patients treated for neck and head cancers.
(-) PTCT, Reduced to Underperform from Hold at Jefferies, which also cut its price target for the stock by $8 to $18 a share.
