Health care stocks turned narrowly higher this afternoon, with the NYSE Health Care Index rising about 0.3% while shares of health care companies in the S&P 500 climbing 0.4% lower as a group.
In company news, Spark Therapeutics ( ONCE ) surged Monday after the biotech firm reported positive top-line results from Phase III testing of its SPK-RPE65 drug candidate, saying the prospective treatment of RPE65-mediated inherited retinal dystrophies met its primary and the first two secondary endpoints of the late-stage trial.
In addition to meeting its primary endpoint of improving functional vision in the intervention group compared with the control group, SPK-RPE65 also met secondary endpoints of full-field light sensitivity and a mobility test in the injected eye. Based on those results, Spark said it plans to file a Biologics License Application for the drug during 2016.
ONCE shares were up nearly 21% in late trade at $53.02 apiece, earlier racing to a session high of $74.93 a share.
