Health care stocks were higher Wednesday, with the NYSE Health Care Index rising nearly 1.1% while shares of health care companies in the S&P 500 were up more than 0.9% as a group.

In company news, shares of Esperion Therapeutics ( ESPR ) soared Wednesday after the drugmaker was raised to Neutral from Sell at Chardan Capital Markets.

The upgrade follows Esperion yesterday saying the U.S. Food and Drug Administration want it to quickly begin a cardiovascular outcomes study as part of Phase III testing of its ETC-1002 drug candidate to determine its efficacy reducing cholesterol levels in patients who are intolerant to statin therapy. The disclosure sent Esperion shares almost 48% lower on Tuesday.

ESPR shares were nearly 11% today at $20.23 apiece, earlier topping out at $21.62 a share.

(+) MDWD, (+22.3%) U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority awards five-year contract worth up to $112 million, including $24 millionto support work needed for FDA approval of NexoBrid and $16 mln for NexoBrid procurement.

(-) HAE, (-6.6%) Brian Concannon resigns as president and CEO, effective immediately, although he will remain with company until Oct. 31 to ensure a smooth transition. Company selects board member Ron Gelbman to be interim CEO.
