Health care stocks fell hard today, with the NYSE Health Care Sector Index tumbling 0.6% and shares of health care companies in the S&P 500 dropping more than 0.7% as a group.

In company news, Sientra ( SIEN ) shares were slammed Thursday, falling to a record low after the surgical supply company today said it sent letters to plastic surgeons telling them that British regulators have suspended the CE certification of one of its contract manufacturers.

While the suspension affects all products currently produced by the Sientra supplier, Silimed, throughout the UK and Europe, Sientra said the move "has no applicability" to its breast implants and other products.

Silimed currently is Sientra's sole supplier of silicone gel breast implants, tissue expanders and other products from its manufacturing facility in Brazil, according to a recent 10-Q quarterly report.

SIEN shares were down nearly 53% at $9.76 apiece in late trade, earlier dropping to an all-time low of $9.38 a share. Before today's decline, the stock previously had risen almost 36% since the company's initial public offering in October 2014.
