In health-care stocks news, ARIAD Pharmaceuticals ( ARIA ), whose key product is a treatment for leukemia, posted weaker-than-expected Q2 results. The net loss widened to $63.2 million, or $0.33 per share, compared to a net loss of $56.9 million, or $0.30 per share, for the same period in 2014.

Meanwhile, Sucampo Pharmaceuticals ( SCMP ) rose in Wednesday's pre-market session after it reported better-than-expected financial results for Q2 and raised its earnings guidance for fiscal 2015 above Street forecasts.
