Health Care Sector Update for 01/02/2018: VERU, BTX, SNGX

Health care stocks were posting strong gains, including a 0.9% increase for the NYSE Health Care Index in recent trading Tuesday. Shares of health care companies in the S&P 500 were up more than 0.9% as a group while the Nasdaq Biotechnology index raced over 1.7% higher.

Among health care stocks moving on news today:

+ Veru ( VERU ) streaked higher Tuesday, at one point rising nearly 17% to a session high of $1.34 a share, despite the urology and cancer drugmaker today reporting a wider fiscal Q4 loss compared with year-ago levels, posting a net loss of $0.10 per share during the three months ended Sept. 30, expanding on a $0.06 per share net loss last year and also missing the single analyst estimate expecting a $0.04 per share net loss. Revenue grew 2.8% to $3.7 million, also trailing the $3.8 million lone-analyst call.

In other sector news:

- BioTime ( BTX ) climbed by double digits after a subsidiary identified genes believed to have a role in tissue regeneration as well as cancer.

- Soligenix ( SNGX ) fell after receiving a US patent for use of Dusquetide in oral mucositis.
