Gold Firmer on Short Covering and Some Fresh Safe-Haven Demand - report

Comex gold futures prices are modestly higher Monday morning in more thin holiday trading. Some short covering, bargain hunting and even some fresh safe-haven demand are featured, Kitco News reported.

February gold traded up $6.10 an ounce at US$1,662.00. Spot gold was quoted up $4.30 at $1,661.25. March Comex silver traded up $0.07 at $30.045 an ounce.

Markets were quieter overnight, on this last trading day of the year, and ahead of the New Year's Day holiday on Tuesday. Most U.S. markets close early Monday.
