General Mills' Healthy Food Range to Hit Stores This Summer - Analyst Blog

General Mills Inc.GIS has revealed its plan to debut several wellness products this summer. The idea is to appeal to the growing number of health conscious customers who prefer the convenience of packaged food without compromising on their wellbeing.

The new range of products includes yogurt, bars and cereals for breakfast and snacking. Other launches include sweet treats and precooked meal helpers.

Among breakfast and snacking items, the company has introduced Nature Valley Toasted Oats Muesli, Yoplait Plenti, Annie's organic soups, Food Should Taste Good Real Good Bars, Nature Valley Simple Nut Bars, Cheerios Plus and Yoplait O'Fruit.

Cooking shortcut products include Progresso's new line of premium Cooking Stocks, Green Giant Fire Roasted Vegetables, Old El Paso Mini Taco Boats and Latina Fresh Gluten Free Pasta. These products reduce cooking time making the process hassle-free, and encourage healthy eating habits.

General Mills' latest sweet treat menu will include Cinnabon Mini Pull-Aparts from Pillsbury, Haagen-Dazs Stick Bars, FiberOne Cheesecake Bars and Betty Crocker Mug Cakes. These sweet treats come in small-bite sizes and low-calorie version.

Other recently launched products include Limited Edition Star Wars and Minions cereals, Yoplait Go-Gurt and kid yogurts featuring characters from Disney's Frozen . These products are also inspired by characters from popular movies like Minions and Star Wars apart from Frozen .

These products intend to cater to consumers' changing food preferences. There are a growing number of those who prefer their food gluten-free and organic, having simple ingredients and free from artificial additives. They prefer food with higher nutritional value, including higher protein, more fiber and whole grains. Keeping these points in mind, General Mills' new products include real ingredients like dried fruits, toasted coconut, nuts and pumpkin seeds and are available in various flavors.

With evolving consumer food preferences, in fiscal 2016, General Mills has committed to invest in consumer-focused innovation and marketing and accelerate the natural and organic product portfolio to boost sales.

General Mills has been focusing on improving the nutritional quotient of its portfolio for quite some time now. In Jun 2015, the company revealed that it plans to launch a healthier version of Trix and Reese's Puffs cereals in 2015 winter. This fulfills the company's commitment to remove artificial flavors and colors from most of its cereals. (Read: General Mills to Stop Using Artificial Ingredients )

While 75% of its cereals will be devoid of artificial flavors and colors by Jan 2017, the company expects these ingredients to be completely removed from its entire cereals portfolio by 2017.

General Mills carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
