Funds bought these 5 senior care stocks last quarter

By James Dennin for Kapitall.

Between the 2000 and 2010 United States census, the population of the country increased a little less than 10% while the population of people 65 and over increased 15%.

That's a trend that's all but certain to continue for the foreseeable future. In 1960 families usually had about 4 babies, now they usually have about 2 (all data from Pew Research).

It doesn't take a professional demographer to do the math, but Pew has the population of seniors climbing to 20% by the 2030s .

There are lots of ways to get exposure to the trend usuing publicly traded stocks. An obvious area is biotechnology, particularly the vast number of firms focused on medicines designed for the elderly-orthopedic and cardiovascular in particular.

But there are a lot of other ways to invest in aging Boomers, particularly as a growing number of Real Estate Investment Trusts have started operating nursing homes. We decided to build a list of these stocks, and then screen them for notable names by who had experienced the biggest spikes in institutional purchasing over the last quarter.

To build this list we took companies working in senior care, residential senior care, as well as cardiovascular and orthopedic technology. We then narrowed it to companies who had experienced an uptick in share purchases by 5% or more, a significant swing that could help create more demand for the stock.

Do you think senior care is as a reliable investment as demographics suggest? Use the list below to begin your analysis and let us know what you think in the comments.
