FTSE 100 rises on trade optimism, Persimmon drags on housebuilders

Feb 25 (Reuters) - Britain's FTSE 100 edged higher as banksand mining companies gained on U.S. President Trump's decisionto delay raising tariffs on Chinese goods, while housebuildersfell on reports that Persimmon's government house-funding schemewas under scrutiny from the country's housing minister.

The FTSE 100 .FTSE was up 0.1 percent while the FTSE 250 .FTMC was down 0.3 percent. Both indexes were underperformingtheir European peers by 0836 GMT.

As a result, mining shares .FTNMX1770 extended their highsand Asia-exposed financial heavyweights such as PrudentialFinancial PRU.L and Standard CharteredSTAN.L also advanced.

Rival homebuilders Barratt BDEV.L , Taylor WimpeyTW.L and Berkeley BKGH.L all fell.

Mid-cap miner CentaminCEY.L slipped nearly 10 percent, oncourse for its worst day in nearly five months, as its annualgold production fell and a 2019 production forecast missedJefferies' estimates.
