Fresenius Medical Care North America ("FMCNA"), the North American division of Fresenius Medical Care ( FMS ), recently revealed that while the prevalence of diabetes and hypertension, in the U.S., is widely recognized, many people do not understand that these conditions often lead to chronic kidney disease ("CKD").

In fact, over 26 million individuals in the U.S. suffer from CKD. Unknown to them, many more individuals are at risk. Changes in passing urine, swelling of the hands, feet or face, tiredness, nausea, dizziness, headaches and loss of appetite are some indicators of kidney disease.

Fresenius Medical Care North America utilizes the occasion of the National Kidney Month, in March, to recommend that potential victims of CKD become knowledgeable about the disease and learn how to retard its progress.

CKD is a degenerative loss of kidney function. Many individuals afflicted by CKD are in the early stages of the condition. When CKD leads to end-stage renal disease ("ESRD"), the treatment options are restricted to dialysis or organ transplant.

Fresenius Medical Care North America believes that screening tests are of great importance as many early stage victims do not display typical symptoms. It is helpful to detect CKD early as strategies can then be devised to slow down the progress of the disease.

The company suggests five strategies for potential victims of kidney disease so that they may identify the disease and then slow down its deterioration. The five tips include the following: screen yourself for CKD, especially if you have hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular problems or a family history of kidney disorder; eat healthy and exercise periodically; take medications as prescribed by the doctor; maintain your "good" body weight; and should you have CKD, then figure out how to manage your illness with the help of your doctor.

Fresenius Medical Care North America has devised many educational initiatives to enable victims and their families to cope with CKD. Its Treatment Options Program ("TOPs") are educational modules available, for free, to the public. These sessions disseminate data about managing kidney disease and treatment options when CKD degenerates into kidney failure. Timings and locations of these classes may be obtained from the toll free number and web-site address provided by the company.

Fresenius Medical, which employs 79,159 people globally, is the largest provider of products and services for patients undergoing dialysis treatment on the planet. The company's principal competitor in the U.S. is DaVita Inc. ( DVA ), which provides dialysis services for patients suffering from chronic kidney failure or end stage renal disease.
