Ford's (F) US Sales Down 3.4% in March, Retail Sales Up 1% - Analyst Blog

Ford Motor Co.F reported a 3.4% decline in sales in the U.S. to 235,929 units in Mar 2015. Retail sales inched up 1%, thus attaining the highest level since 2006, driven by the popularity of Ford's new products. However, fleet sales fell 13% due to fleet order timing.

Brand-wise, the automaker's Ford brand's sales fell 3.4% to 227,234 units in the month. Meanwhile, the Lincoln brand reported a 3.1% decline in sales to 8,695 units.

Sales of cars and utility vehicles fell 11.6% and 2.1% to 76,765 units and 69,494 units, respectively. However, Ford's truck sales increased 3.8% in March, driven by a 59.8% surge in sales of the Transit Connect and a 52.4% rise in sales of heavy trucks. Retail sales of the F-series increased 10% in March.

Among cars, Ford Focus and Fusion were the most popular during the month. However, both recorded a year-over-year decline in sales.

Among utility vehicles, Ford Escape led in terms of popularity despite an 8.4% fall in sales. Ford Explorer recorded a 17% surge in sales to 20,765 units. This is Ford Explorer's best March sales volume.

Sales of Ford Mustang surged 36% to 12,663 units in the month, making it the car's best March sales since 2007. Since the launch of the new Mustang model, it has emerged as the highest-selling sports car in America.

Sales of Ford brand cars fell 10.6% to 73,085 units, while Ford brand utility vehicle sales fell 3.9% to 64,479 units in Mar 2015. Meanwhile, the Lincoln brand cars' sales fell 27.6% to 3,680 units, while Lincoln utility vehicles witnessed a 29.2% surge in sales to 5,015 units.

Ford currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). Better-ranked automobile stocks include Gentherm Incorporated THRM , General Motors Company GM and Wabash National Corp. WNC . While Gentherm sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), both General Motors and Wabash National carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
