Financial stocks were narrowly straddling both sides of their break-even marks, with the NYSE Financial Sector Index climbing a little more than 0.1% while financial companies in the S&P 500 Index slipped almost 0.1%. Elsewhere, the Philadelphia Housing Sector Index ( HGX ) was up more than 0.1% ahead of an expected rate rise by monetary policy-makers on the Federal Open Market Committee at 2 pm ET.

+ Progressive ( PGR ) gained after the property and casualty insurer reported a 20% year-over-year increase in net premiums written to $2.02 bln during November. Net premiums earned climbed 17% to $2.11 bln.
In other news:
+ Medallion Financial Corp ( MFIN ) added more than 17% in Wednesday trading after the specialty lender recently closed on the sale of a $127 mln portfolio of prime-credit consumer loan receivables to an unnamed super-regional bank for $134.7 mln in cash.
+ Heartland Financial USA ( HTLF ) declares a special cash dividend of $0.07 per share, payable Dec. 29 to shareholders of record on Dec. 22.
