Financial stocks have turned mixed in late afternoon trading, including a nearly 0.1% decline for the NYSE Financial Index while shares of financial companies in the S&P 500 were rising over 0.4%. The Philadelphia Housing Index was rising about 0.5%.

Among financial stocks moving on news:

(+) Stifel Financial ( SF ) climbed more than 5% at one point on Friday after the financial services company reported adjusted Q4 net income of $1.57 per share, up from $1.47 per share a year ago and beating the Capital IQ by $0.10 per share. Net revenue fell to $793.4 million from $804.1 million last year but still topped the $765.5 million analyst mean.

In other sector news:

(+) Aon ( AON ) was rising in recent trading, climbing about 7%, after the insurance brokerage Friday reported adjusted Q4 net income of $2.16 per share, up from $1.82 per share during the same quarter last year and topping the analyst mean by $0.03 per share.

(+) LPL Financial ( LPLA ) raced over 6% higher on Friday after the brokerage company said its Q4 earnings before amortization of intangible assets surged 96% over year-ago levels to $1.49 per share. Analysts, on average, had been looking for $1.37 per share on an adjusted basis and GAAP earnings of $1.27 per share.

(-) Medical Properties Trust ( MPW ) slid nearly 3% lower on Friday after the real estate investment trust announced an $859 million purchase and lease-back transaction for 11 hospital facilities in Australia previously owned by affiliates of Healthscope (HSO.AX).
