Fiat Chrysler Recalls About 1.5 Million Trucks For Airbag Issues

Announced Thursday, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles ( FCAU ) has recalled more than 1.5 million trucks in order to fix problems with the driver's and side-impact airbags.

The biggest of three recalls covers 1.35 million Ram 1500, 2500, and 2500 pickup trucks, as well as 3500, 4500, and 5500 Chassis Cabs, mostly in North America. The trucks are all from the 2012-2014 model years.

The international automobile company said that they found some trucks contain steering wheel wires that would wear down, due to contact with a spring, to the point of causing a short circuit, making the driver's side airbag to inflate without crash. In some affected trucks, the airbag light may power on before there is a problem.

Only two injuries are known to be caused by this issue; however, no crashes have been reported.

When brought to a dealership, workers there will inspect each vehicle, tie off the wiring harness, and place protective caps on the springs. Fiat Chrysler is currently mailing notices to vehicle owners informing them of the recall.

The second recall details 188,000 Ram Quad Cab pickup trucks, all from the 2014-2015 model years. In this case, the side curtain airbags do not comply with federal regulations that protect rear-sitting passengers if the truck rolls over. Owners will be told when they can make an appointment to get the problem fixed.

There are no known crashes, injuries, or complaints.

In the third recall, 194,000 Ram 2500, 2500 pickup trucks, and 2500 Chassis Cabs to fix a defective weld in the steering system. It covers certain trucks from the 2013 and 2014 model years. The company said that if the weld stops working, steering parts can separate and cause reduced steering capacity. Fiat Chrysler also said that owners will be notified in October to take their trucks to dealers for an inspection, and if needed, the steering welds will be fixed. Only one crash, but no injuries, are known to be caused by this issue.

The company advised drivers and passengers to wear seat belts in addition to relying on air bags.
