Facebook (FB) Enables 360-degree VR Videos in News Feed

Facebook, Inc.FB has introduced a new feature for its platform that will enable users to watch 360-degree videos in its news feed. This was developed using the technology from Oculus, the virtual reality company that Facebook acquired in 2014 for about $2 billion.

It seems that Facebook has taken this initiative to bring virtual reality from games to movies in order to reach a wider section of the audience. Not only will this lead to higher engagement levels but these videos can also become excellent mediums for advertising and marketing companies.

360-degree videos are created using a set of cameras arranged in a circular formation so as to capture a scene from all possible angles. This will allow users to view a video from their preferred angle. All a user has to do is to tilt their phone or swipe on the screen to get a different view. Desktop users can drag the cursor around to get a 360 view.

With this initiative, Facebook has opened a new frontier for content creators to benefit by sharing their innovative 360-degree videos. The feature was introduced with a 360-degree video uploaded from Walt Disney DIS as a teaser for its upcoming Star Wars movie. This apart, videos were also uploaded from publishers such as GoPro GPRO , Discovery, LeBron James & Uninterrupted, NBC's Saturday Night Live and VICE which uploaded a 360-degree video of a documentary based in Afghanistan.

While it is expected that going ahead, a lot more content creators and companies should come up with more such videos, the expensive filming-gear can be restrictive to some.

Nonetheless we believe that this launch is a strategic fit for this Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) company as it precedes the launch of its virtual reality headset, Oculus Rift that is expected to hit the shelves in the first quarter of 2016. The 360-degree video feature will not only make virtual reality mainstream but is also expected to complement Oculus Rift for enhancing the user experience.

As of now, this new technology is only compatible with Google's Android devices while the same for Apple's AAPL iOS will take a few more months.
