American depository receipts of European stocks were trading 1.1% higher at 133.07 on the Bank of New York Mellon Europe ADR Index on Wednesday morning.
Gainers in Continental Europe were led by Alcatel-Lucent ( ALU ), a cloud networking and ultra-broadband access provider, 3.1% higher, technology investment company Nokia ( NOK ), up by 2.7% and Banco Santander ( SAN ), 2.4% higher. Brewing company AB InBev ( BUD ) was 1.6% higher.
In the UK, metal mining company Rio Tinto ( RIO ) rose by 3.1% while high street banks HSBC (HSBC) and Barclays Bank (BCS) gained 2.4% and 1.2%, respectively. Unilever (UL),a provider of food, home and personal care products, edged up by 1.2%.
Decliners in Continental Europe were led by semiconductor solutions company STMicroelectronics - New York Shares (STM), 4.9% lower, followed by pharmaceutical companies Biotie (BITI), Forward Pharma (FWP) and Flamel Technologies (FLML), trading 1.7%, 2.0% and 0.8% lower, respectively.
In the UK, microprocessor designer ARM (ARMH) was down by 1.2% while pharmaceutical company Celsus Therapeutics (CLTX) fell by 1.0% and Luxfer (LXFR), a global materials technology company, edged 0.9% lower.
