American depository receipts of European stocks were trading 0.6% higher at 134.43 on the Bank of New York Mellon Europe ADR Index before midday on Friday.
Gainers in Continental Europe were led by Danish pharmaceutical Zealand Pharma ( ZEAL ), up 3.6%; followed by French medical device maker Edap ( EDAP ), 3.4% higher; Paris-based genome engineering company Cellectis ( CLLS ), up 2.6%; and French maker of geophysical equipment CGG ( CGG ), 2.6% higher.
In the United Kingdom, shares of global resources company BHP Billiton ( BHP ) rose 2.6%; international education and media firm Pearson (PSO) rose 2.6%, British healthcare company Shire (SHPG) edged up 1.5%; while British engineering firm Amec Foster Wheeler (AMFW) also gained 1.5%.
Decliners in Continental Europe were led by Netherlands-based online hotel search platform Trivago (TRVG), down 2.9%; chipset maker Sequans Communications (SQNS), 2.1% lower; and Italian furniture manufacturer Natuzzi (NTZ), down 1.9%.
And, in the U.K., shares of British development-stage biopharmaceutical Akari Therapeutics (AKTX) decreased 1.6%, while another clinical-stage biopharma Adaptimmune Therapeutics (ADAP) fell 1.1%.
