Top Energy Stocks
Energy stocks extended their declines this afternoon, with the NYSE Energy Sector Index falling slightly more than 1.0% while shares of energy companies in the S&P 500 also were down almost 1.6% as a group. West Texas Intermediate crude oil for June delivery settled $1.79 lower at $61.81 per barrel at the New York Mercantile Exchange while the global benchmark Brent crude June contract declined $1.54 to $70.64 per barrel. June natural gas futures fell 3 cents to $2.59 per 1 million BTU. Among energy-related ETFs, the United States Oil fund was nearly 3.0% lower while the United States Natural Gas fund was dropping almost 1.1%. The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector index was down nearly 1.3%.

(-) Apache (APA) slid almost 6% on Thursday after the oil and natural gas company earned $0.10 per share during the January-to-March reporting period, excluding one-time items, slipping from $0.32 per share during the year-ago period and missing the Capital IQ consensus by $0.04 per share.
In other sector news:
(+) Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A,RDS.B) climbed nearly 2% after Thursday reporting Q1 net income of $0.73 per share, improving on a $0.70 per share profit during the same quarter last year and beating the Capital IQ consensus expecting $0.58 per share.
(-) Murphy Oil Corp (MUR) fell 3% on Thursday. The oil and natural gas company reported adjusted Q1 net income of $0.15 per share, beating the Capital IQ consensus by $0.04 per share. Total revenue rose to $591.0 million from $374.8 million during the year-ago period and also topping the $557.2 million analyst mean.
(-) Unit Corp (UNT) dropped more than 7% after the contract driller Thursday reported Q1 revenue of $189.7 million, down from $205.1 million during the same quarter last year and trailing the Capital IQ consensus looking for $202.2 million in revenue for the three months ended March 31.
