Energy Sector Update for 12/27/2016: BP,HAL,PBR,GMLP

Energy stocks were ending mostly higher, with the NYSE Energy Sector Index rising about 0.3% while shares of energy companies in the S&P 500 were holding on for a 0.1% gain. Crude oil for February delivery settled 88 cents higher at $53.90 per barrel while February natural gas futures rose 9 cents today to $3.77 per 1 million BTU.

In company news, BP ( BP ) American depository shares were slightly higher in late Tuesday trading following reports the oil major will soon add convenience stores in three more countries following a successful UK launch recently.

BP has been in talks with grocery retailers in three unidentified countries about partnering on convenience stores, according to the (UK) Telegraph newspaper. The company is pushing the model as a "global strategy" as it seeks to boost earnings from its worldwide portfolio of 17,200 service stations.

BP shares were up about 0.2% at $37.10 each, earlier today stopping just 5 cents shy of its 52-week high at $37.28 a share.

In other sector news,

(+) HAL, Files a notice with Russian regulators for the potential purchase of up to 100% of Novomet Oil Service Holding, an artificial lift company that has developed electric submersible pumps.

(-) GMLP, Petrobras ( PBR ) issues notice for an early June 2017 charter termination for the Golar Spirit floating storage and regasification unit, paying around 62% of projected EBITDA for the cancelled 14-month period ending in August 2018 as compensation.
