Energy stocks were ending sharply higher, with the NYSE Energy Sector Index climbing almost 3.9% while shares of energy companies in the S&P 500 were up more than 4.4% as a group. West Texas Intermediate crude oil for February delivery settled almost 9% higher, rising $4.69 to $46.22 per barrel in New York while the global benchmark Brent crude February contract advanced $4.44 to $54.91 per barrel. January natural gas futures rose 8 cents to $3.54 per 1 million BTU. Among energy-related ETFs, the United States Oil fund climbed over 2.5% while the United States Natural Gas fund still declined nearly 3.9%. The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector index was up nearly 4.8%.

Among energy stocks moving on news:

(+) TransGlobe Energy Corp (TGA,TGL.TO) climbed almost 7% on Wednesday after the Canadian oil and natural gas company said in a regulatory filing that board member David Cook acquired another 10,000 of its common shares on Dec. 21 for $1.62 each. He now owns almost 59,800 TransGlobe shares, or about 0.08% of its outstanding stock.

In other sector news:

(+) Aemetis ( AMTX ) jumped 26% after the renewable-fuels producer said its Aemetis Biogas subsidiary has closed on a $30 million equity investment primarily through a series of 20-year agreements with dairy farms in California and without the parent company issuing any of its shares.

(+) Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A,RDS.B) rose nearly 2% higher Wednesday after Reuters reported the energy major has started production at its Prelude floating liquefied natural gas facility offshore of Broome, Western Australia.
