Energy shares were on course to close lower on Tuesday as crude oil futures extended their losses.
Light, sweet crude oil for March delivery was down 4.6% at $28.34 per barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil was 1.2% higher at $0.85 per gallon while natural gas was down 0.1% at $1.68 British thermal units.
In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) was down 5.8% at $8.15 while the United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) was down 1.8% at $7.68.
In other energy news, Shares of VTTI Energy Partners ( VTTI ) were sliding Tuesday after the operator of energy infrastructure assets reported Q4 profits that decreased significantly from a year earlier on lower revenues that were shy of consensus forecasts.
Shares in the company were 2.9% lower at $15.42 in recent trade. The company has traded between $14.80 and $28.20 over the past 52 weeks.
