Leading technology and engineering services provider company Emerson Electric Co.'sEMR business unit, Emerson Process Management, is all set to provide clean electrical power to China's Sichuan province by automating the Shehong Liushu Hydropower Project.
The Tuopai Power Development Co. Ltd., which is running the Shehong Liushu Hydropower Project, is one of the first Chinese hydropower generators to use "distributed control system" technology. This technology offers multiple benefits to plant operators such as higher efficiency, reliable grid synchronization, enhanced cybersecurity and an overall better operational control.
The Tuopai project comprises construction of three 16-megawatt units to help meet the energy needs of Shehong region in southwest Sichuan, and the first unit is expected to be delivered by Mar 2016. Emerson's selection comes on the back of its proven mettle for providing the state-of-the-art control and SCADA (?) technology to hydrocarbon plants across the globe.
Emerson is deploying Ovation control and SCADA technology to execute the hydropower operations of the project. Leveraging the competence of Ovation technology, Emerson will manage all primary plant equipment, automate voltage regulation and synchronize information from 24 spillways. In addition, the company will offer its Rosemount pressure and level transmitters for driving operational excellence of the project.
China is experiencing notable development in small hydropower projects as government is focusing on clean energy sources to supplement thermal power generation. Of late, powering the vast rural stretches in the country has become a priority for the Chinese government.
The recent development comes as a welcome change for Emerson as it has been facing sluggishness in the industrial market, mainly in China. This weakness adversely impacted the company's order rates and dragged the sales figure on a year-over-year basis for third-quarter fiscal 2015. This apart, the Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell) stock continues to face operational issues as the U.S. dollar strengthens against Yen.
Better-ranked stocks in the sector include AO Smith Corp. AOS , AZZ incorporated AZZ and Ideal Power, Inc. IPWR . While AO Smith Corp sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), both AZZ incorporated and Ideal Power carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) each.
