ECB, jobless claims top calendar

The European Central Bank's policy announcement is the main event today, but there are other noteworthy items on the agenda as well.

Scheduled for 7:45 a.m. ET, the ECB is expected to cut interest rates close to zero in a bid to stimulate the region's economy and to halt deflation. A press conference starts 45 minutes later.

In Washington, the Labor Department follows with weekly jobless claims at 8:30 a.m. Forecasters estimate that 310,000 Americans sought unemployment benefits for the first time, up from 300,000 in the previous week.

Retailers including Costco and L Brands also release monthly same-store sales early in the session.

Joy Global, Ciena, Navistar, and J.M. Smucker report earnings before the opening bell. VeriFone Systems follows in the afternoon.

Non-farm payrolls are tomorrow morning's big event.
