ECB, jobless claims lead calendar

The European Central Bank dominates this morning's agenda.

The ECB's monetary-policy statement is due at 7:45 a.m. ET, followed by a press conference at 8:30 a.m. ET. Traders will be watching for information about quantitative easing and potential conflict among the bank's leaders.

One this side of the Atlantic, initial jobless claims are also scheduled for 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists expect that 285,000 Americans sought unemployment benefits for the first time last week, compared with 287,000 in the previous period.

Select retailers will announce monthly same-store sales, and companies including DirecTV, Cablevision, Teradata, Apache, and AOL will release quarterly results before the opening bell. Earnings from Walt Disney, First Solar, Nvidia, and Monster Beverage follow in the afternoon.

Tomorrow's calendar is dominated by the Labor Department's monthly non-farm payrolls report. Humana and Cooper Tire & Rubber issue results as well.
