There are few scheduled economic releases this week, but individual companies may be active as earnings season begins and two big conferences are held.
Earnings season officially begins tomorrow afternoon when Alcoa reports fourth-quarter results. Between Tuesday and Friday, JP Morgan will host its annual health-care conference and the Consumer Electronics Show will be held. Companies in both sectors could be active in conjunction with the events.
Economic news focuses more heavily on Europe than the United States, with Eurozone gross domestic product on Wednesday and interest-rate decisions from the Bank of England and the European Central Bank the next day.
The main U.S. reports are regular weekly releases, including mortgage applications on Wednesday and initial jobless claims on Thursday.
It is also possible that companies will pre-announce quarterly results, which could draw attention to individual names.
