Did You Miss Edwards Lifesciences' (NYSE:EW) Impressive 203% Share Price Gain?

The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. Long term Edwards Lifesciences Corporation (NYSE:EW) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 203% in five years. On top of that, the share price is up 25% in about a quarter.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over half a decade, Edwards Lifesciences managed to grow its earnings per share at 11% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 25% per year, over the same period. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth. This favorable sentiment is reflected in its (fairly optimistic) P/E ratio of 76.64.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Edwards Lifesciences shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 51% over the last year. That's better than the annualised return of 25% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
