Despite currently being unprofitable, Mirati Therapeutics (NASDAQ:MRTX) has delivered a 667% return to shareholders over 5 years

It's been a soft week for Mirati Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRTX) shares, which are down 11%. But that does not change the realty that the stock's performance has been terrific, over five years. Indeed, the share price is up a whopping 667% in that time. So it might be that some shareholders are taking profits after good performance. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price. While the long term returns are impressive, we do have some sympathy for those who bought more recently, given the 56% drop, in the last year. We love happy stories like this one. The company should be really proud of that performance!

While the stock has fallen 11% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

Because Mirati Therapeutics made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

For the last half decade, Mirati Therapeutics can boast revenue growth at a rate of 66% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. Arguably, this is well and truly reflected in the strong share price gain of 50%(per year) over the same period. Despite the strong run, top performers like Mirati Therapeutics have been known to go on winning for decades. On the face of it, this looks lke a good opportunity, although we note sentiment seems very positive already.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 15% in the twelve months, Mirati Therapeutics shareholders did even worse, losing 56%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 50%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
