Weekly mortgage applications get the ball rolling at 7:30 a.m. ET. The producer-price index at 8:30 a.m. is expected to show a gain of 0.2 percent overall and excluding food and energy. Last month, they fell 0.2 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively.
Industrial production and capacity utilization for June follow at 9:15 a.m. ET. Economists forecast a 0.4 percent increase in production, compared with 0.6 percent in May. Capacity utilization is expected to climb to 79.2 percent from 79.1 percent.
Major earnings reports for the morning include Bank of America, Abbott Laboratories, PNC Financial, BlackRock, and Textron.
Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen will begin an appearance on Capitol Hill at 10 a.m. ET, but she might have less effect on trading because she also spoke yesterday in the Senate.
NAHB's housing market index at 10 a.m. ET could affect trading in homebuilders. Economists anticipate a reading of 50, up from 49 in June.
Weekly crude inventories follow at 10:30 a.m. ET, and the Fed's Beige Book survey of economic conditions follows at 2 p.m. ET.
More earnings follow after the closing bell, led by eBay, Yum Brands, Las Vegas Sands, and SanDisk.
The big names Thursday morning include Morgan Stanley, UnitedHealth, Blackstone, and Baker Hughes.
