Corrects headline and story to reflect that the surplus was NOT better than forecasts. A correct version of the story follows:

US Treasury posted a $106.9 billion surplus in April, compared with $113 billion surplus last year. Receipts edged up 1.8% y/y. Outlays climbed 4.6% year-over-year. For the fiscal year to date, the budget shortfall is running at $306.4 billion, but that's a 37.2% improvement versus the $487.6 billion red ink amount for the same 7-month period last year. For the year-to-date, receipts are up 8.2% while spending is down 2.4%.
