Consumers, home prices on tap

Today's agenda includes several earnings releases and economic events.

Pfizer, Ford, DuPont, D.R. Horton, and Danaher announce quarterly results before the opening bell. Yahoo, Amgen, AT&T, Illumina, and Electronic Arts report in the afternoon.

Durable-goods orders for December will also be released at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists anticipate an increase of 2.1 percent, down from 3.4 percent the previous month.

The Case-Shiller index of home prices for November follows at 9 a.m. ET and is expected to show an increase of 13.8 percent. That compares with October's 13.6 percent gain.

Consumer confidence at 10 a.m. ET is probably the most important economic number. Economists are looking for a reading of 77.5, down from 78.1 in December.

The Richmond Federal Reserve will release its regional activity index at the same time. While it's unlikely to affect market sentiment, it will provide useful clues on the direction of the broader economy.

Tomorrow's calendar is dominated by the Fed's monetary announcement at 2 p.m. ET. Boeing, Dow Chemical, EMC, Facebook, and Qualcomm report as well.
