Consumer stocks were moderately higher this afternoon, with shares of consumer staples companies in the S&P 500 climbing about 0.4% while shares of consumer discretionary firms in the S&P 500 were up almost 0.1%.

In company news, shares of the Franklin Covey Co. ( FC ) rose Monday after the training and consulting services company today began a $35 million dutch auction tender offer, seeking to reacquire shares of its common stock for $15.50 to $17.75 apiece.

At its current terms, the tender offer would buy back between 2 million to 2.5 million of the company's share. The deal is slated to run through Jan. 12, unless extended by Franklin Covey.

FC shares were up about 1% in late trade at $16.30 each, easing from mid-day high of $16.49 a share.

In other sector news,

(+) BNED, Authorizes $50 mln stock buyback plan.

(-) GPRO, Reduced to Underweight from Equal Weight at Morgan Stanley, which also cut its price target for the company's stock by $10 to $12 a share.
