Consumer stocks were mostly lower, with shares of consumer staples companies in the S&P 500 sinking over 0.5% while shares of consumer discretionary firms in the S&P 500 were posting a 0.2% decline.

In company news, Dr Pepper Snapple Group ( DPS ) fell Tuesday after analysts at Evercore ISI today cut their rating for the soft-drink bottler to Hold from Buy.

In a new research note, the brokerage reportedly said Bai Brands is looking for a new majority owner, explaining that could disrupt the companies' three-year-old distribution and allied brands pact. Dr Pepper Snapple also purchased a 3% stake in Bai Brands in May 2015 for $15 million.

DPS shares were down over 4% at $86.98 apiece, previously dropping to a session low of $85.32 a share.
