Consumer stocks were mostly lower, with shares of consumer staples companies in the S&P 500 falling less than 0.1% while shares of consumer discretionary firms in the S&P 500 were down about 0.3%.

In company news, GP Strategies Corp. ( GPX ) rose Wednesday after the education and training company received an upgrade to Buy from Neutral with a $35 price target at ROTH Capital, overcoming disappointing Q1 financial results.

The analyst move, reversing a ROTH downgrade to Neutral six months ago, follows GP Strategies's Tuesday reporting Q1 net income of $4.1 million, or $0.24 per share, down from a $4.3 million gain last year and trailing the Capital IQ consensus by $0.07 per share.

Revenue slid 2% from year-ago levels to $115.3 million, missing analyst estimates by around $4.3 million. Negative currency translations trimmed the company's reported revenue by around $2.4 million during the quarter, it said.

GPX shares were ahead by more than 10% at $34.61 a share, down slightly from its high earlier at $34.89 a share and reversing a 4.5% decline during Tuesday's session. The stock has traded within a 52-week range of $23.06 to $37.85 a share, already climbing nearly 30% over the past 12 months before Wednesday's price gain.

(+) HLF, (+21.5%) Adjusted Q1 EPS of $1.29 beats Capital IQ consensus by $0.28 per share. Revenue falls 12.5% to $1.1 bln, topping estimates by $10 mln. Raises FY15 EPS above consensus but also lowers revenue outlook slightly.

(-) ZU, (-14.2%) Adjusted Q1 EPS of $0.01 beats by $0.05 per share. Revenue climbs 28.9% to $306.6 mln but still lags Street view by $6.9 mln. Guides Q2, FY15 revenue under consensus. Downgrades at Stifel Nicolaus, Oppenheimer.
