Top Consumer Stocks
Consumer stocks were ending broadly higher, supported by higher-than-expected financial results for several "big box" retailers including Walmart ( WMT ) and Home Depot ( HD ). At last look, shares of consumer staples companies in the S&P 500 were jumped to a 1.0% gain although shares of consumer discretionary firms in the S&P 500 were adding almost 0.6% in value.
In company news, shares of Trex Company ( TREX ) rose to a record high on Tuesday after the flooring seller today reported improved Q4 net income and revenue compared with the same quarter last year and also beating Wall Street expectations while edging above the Street view with its Q1 revenue forecast.
The company earned $0.43 per share during the three months ended Dec. 31, up from $0.26 per share during the year-ago period and exceeding the Capital IQ consensus by $$0.02 per share. Revenue climbed 6.8% over year-ago levels to $95.3 million, also topping the $93.02 million consensus.
For the current quarter ending March 31, the company is modeling around $144 million in revenue, narrowly beating the $143.28 million Street voew/
TREX shares were up more than 2% at $71.37 each, easing from a prior run to a best-ever $78.15 a share.
