Consumer stocks were broadly higher, supported by higher-than-expected financial results for several "big box" retailers including Walmart ( WMT ) and Home Depot ( HD ). At last look, shares of consumer staples companies in the S&P 500 were jumping out to a nearly 0.8% gain although shares of consumer discretionary firms in the S&P 500 were adding almost 0.5% in value.

In company news, America's Car-Mart ( CRMT ) shares were careening off the road Tuesday after the automotive retailer today reported below-consensus fiscal Q3 results.

The company earned $0.35 per share during the three months ended Jan. 31, down from a $0.47 per share profit during the same quarter last year and trailing the Capital IQ consensus by $0.29 per share. Revenue grew just 0.9% over year-ago levels to $138.8 million, also lagging the $143.6 million consensus.

Among other sales metrics during the quarter, retail unit sales declined 1.3% from last year to 10,866 company-wide although productivity at individual stores inched 1.2% higher to 25.3 units per month from 25 units during the prior year period. Average retail sales price increased $30, or about 0.3%, year-over-year to $10,629.

CRMT shares were down slightly more than 14% this afternoon at $33.15 apiece after earlier retreating to a session low of $32.00 a share.

In other sector news,

(+) LL, (+17.1%) Reports Q4 net loss of $0.20 per share, $0.11 smaller than the Capital IQ Consensus expecting a $0.31 per share loss. Revenue climbs 4.3% over year-ago levels to $224.9 mln, trailing the $242.38 mln consensus.

(-) ENT, (-29.2%) Expects FY16 revenue near or below low end of its prior outlook expecting between $530 mln to $538 mln range and missing analyst mean looking for $158.04 mln. Selects Jeff Leddy to be CEO and principal financial officer after Tom Stevenson quits as CFO.
