Consumer stocks were mixed this afternoon with shares of consumer staples companies in the S&P 500 declining about 0.6%. Shares of consumer discretionary firms in the S&P 500 were ahead by about 0.4%.

In company news, The Priceline Group Inc ( PCLN ) rose Thursday after the travel-reservation website company reported better-than-expected Q4 earnings and revenues although its forecast for Q1 adjusted EPS trailed analyst estimates.

GAAP net income during the three months ended Dec. 31 rose to $452 million, or $8.56 per share, from $378 million during the same quarter last year. Excluding one-time items, non-GAAP net income rose 22% over year-ago levels to $577 million, or $10.85 per share, up from $8.85 per share last year and topping the Capital IQ consensus by $0.75 per share.

Total revenues climbed 19.4% year over year to $1.84 billion and edging out the Street view by around $40 million. Q4 gross travel bookings rose 17% to $10.7 billion.

For the current quarter, the company is projecting an increase of adjusted net income of $7.20 to $7.75 per share, missing estimates by at least $0.77 per share. Quarterly revenues are expected to increase between 4% and 11% relative to year-ago levels. Analysts, on average, are projecting 13.5% growth to $1.86 billion in revenue this quarter.

PCLN shares were up more than 8% at $1,216.62 each, backing down from an early run to $1,220.00 a share. The stock has traded within a 52-week range of $990.69 to $1,378.96 a share, slipping almost 15% over the past 12 months prior to today's price gain.

In other sector news,

(+) BJRI, (+16.7%) Q4 EPS of $0.31 beats Street view by $0.10 per share. Revenue of $213.9 mln roughly in-line with $214.6 mln consensus.

(-) DAVE, (-7.6%) Break-even Q4 trails Capital IQ consensus by $0.17 per share. Revenue slips 4.5% year over year to $34.1 mln, roughly matching expectations for $34.24 mln in revenue.
