Consumer Sector Update for 02/14/2017: SCI,SALE,HIBB

Consumer stocks were mixed Tuesday afternoon, with shares of consumer staples companies in the S&P 500 slipping less than 0.1% lower while shares of consumer discretionary firms in the S&P 500 were climbing to a nearly 0.5% gain.

In company news, Service Corp ( SCI ) shares climbed to an 18-year high on Tuesday after the funeral home and cemetery chain late yesterday reported above-consensus Q4 adjusted net income and revenue.

Excluding one-time items, the company earned $0.47 per share, excluding non-recurring items, up from $0.37 per share during the same quarter last year and beating the Capital IQ consensus by $0.06 per share. Revenue rose 5.2% over year-ago levels to $809.1 million, also exceeding the $788.65 million Street call.

Looking forward to the 12 months ending in December, the company is projecting non-GAAP net income of $1.29 to $1.43 per share, bridging the $1.32 per share consensus.

SCI shares were up more than 7% at $31.71 each, easing from a prior run to their best share price since January 1999 at $32.21 a share.

(+) SALE, (+19.6%) Q4 EPS of $0.37 beats consensus by $0.06 per share. Revenue climbs 16.5% to $96.89 mln, also topping the $95.48 mln Street view. Projected FY17 revenue of $296 mln to $326 mln exceeds $294.13 mln consensus. Guides Q1 revenue in-line with analyst mean.

(-) HIBB, (-12.4%) Projected Q4 EPS of $0.53 to $0.55 trails $0.70 per share consensus while around $246.9 mln in revenue lags $254.44 mln analyst mean. Also sees FY18 EPS of $2.65 to $2.85 vs. $3.09 per share consensus. Same-store sales expected to be flat to rising in low-single digit range over FY17 levels.
