Consumer stocks have improved on their earlier positions this afternoon, with shares of consumer staples companies in the S&P 500 climbing just over 0.1%, reversing a prior decline, while shares of consumer discretionary firms in the S&P 500 extended their advance to more than 1.0%.

Among consumer stocks moving on news:

(+) BRF SA ( BRFS ) rose over 7% on Tuesday after saying said it recently hired former Petrobras ( PBR ) chief financial officer and CEO Ivan de Souza Monteiro to be the new CFO and chief investor relations officer at the Brazilian poultry and pork producer, replacing Elcio Ito. His Jan. 31 selection at BRF is conditional on authorization from Brazil's Public Ethnics Commission because he previously worked at the state-run energy company.

In other sector news:

(+) Ralph Lauren ( RL ) climbed over 8% after the apparel company crushed Wall Street expectations with its fiscal Q3 financial results, reporting non-GAAP net income of $2.32 per share, up from $2.03 per share last year, and a 5% increase in net sales to $1.72 billion. Analysts, on average, had been looking for a $2.15 per share adjusted profit on $1.66 billion in sales.

(+) Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes SA ( GOL ) put up a 4% advance on Tuesday after the Brazilian air carrier reported a 5.6% increase in passenger traffic during January compared with the first month of 2018.

(-) Church & Dwight ( CHD ) fell nearly 8% after the household products company reported an adjusted Q4 profit of $0.57 per share, up from $0.52 per share during the year-ago period but missing the Capital IQ consensus by $0.01 per share.
