Consumer Sector Update for 01/31/2017: COH,TLYS,UAA

Consumer stocks were mixed in afternoon trade, with shares of consumer staples companies in the S&P 500 adding nearly 0.4% in value today while shares of consumer discretionary firms in the S&P 500 were declining almost 0.7%.

In company news, shares of high-end fashion accessories seller Coach ( COH ) advanced Tuesday, with the stock overcoming the company reducing its FY17 sales outlook as well as in-line financial performance during its recently concluded fiscal Q2.

Blaming the impact of a stronger U.S. dollar compared with other currencies, the company cut its sales forecast for this year from a rise in the low- to mid-single percentage digits over FY16 to new guidance expecting year-over-year growth only in the low-single digits, Analysts, on average, currently are modeling a 1.6% sales increase during FY17 to around $1.07 billion.

Coach is still projecting double-digit FY17 earnings growth.

The company today also reported fiscal Q2 net income of $0.75 per share, up from $0.68 per share during the same quarter last year and matching analyst expectations. Net sales grew 3.8% to $1.32 billion, also in-line with the Street view.

COH shares were up more than 3% in mid-day trade at $37.27 apiece, previously climbing to a session high of $37.44 a share.

In other sector news,

(+) TLYS, (+10.2%) Declares special cash dividend of $0.70 per share. Raises Q4 earnings guidance to $0.21 to $0.22 per share from prior range of $0.15 to $0.20 per share and topping Street view by at least $0.02 per share. The company earned $0.10 per share during year-ago period.

(-) UAA, (-25.1%) Q4 EPS of $0.23 trails Street by $0.02 per share. Net sales rise 11.7% to $1.31 bln but still trail $1.41 bln consensus. Sees FY17 sales climbing 11% to 12% to around $5.4 bln, well under the $6.06 bln analyst mean.
