Consumer confidence is the most important item on today's agenda and is the first of four major economic reports this week.
The report is due at 10 a.m. ET. Forecasters expect a reading of 96 for September, down from 101.5 in the previous month.
The Case-Shiller home-price index is actually scheduled earlier at 9 a.m. ET but is less likely to affect sentiment. Economists are looking for a gain of 5 percent in July, matching June's reading. Several European sentiment numbers early in the session could affect trading as well.
Costco also reports earnings in the afternoon.
Tomorrow's big event is ADP's private-sector payrolls report, but European inflation, mortgage applications, the Chicago Purchasing Managers Index, and crude-oil inventories are due as well. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen is also scheduled to make welcoming remarks at a banking regulators' conference at 3 p.m. ET.
Paychex releases earnings after the market closes.
