Commodities Mixed at Trading Close; Crude Flat, Gold Down as Equities Trade Higher

Commodities lost steam after a mixed start to the trading day with gold futures closing lower and crude closing flat for the session.

Crude-oil for September delivery closed flat at $78.98 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

In other energy futures, heating oil was down $0.02 to $2.04 a gallon while natural gas fell $0.03, to $4.61 per million British thermal units.

Meanwhile, gold futures fell as investors showed enthusiasm for a jump in new home sales, released this morning.

Gold for August delivery fell $4.70 to $1,183.10 an ounce. In other metal futures, silver rose $0.09 to $18.20 a troy ounce while copper rose $0.04 to $3.22 a pound.
